Archivio storico di Crespi d'Adda

Crespi d'Adda, Lombardy

Held on the top floor of the former schoolhouse, inside the UNESCO Visitor Centre, the archive gathers technical and administrative documents, late-nineteenth-century glass-plate photographs and drawings from the cotton mill founded in 1878 by Cristoforo Benigno Crespi. It tells the story of the workers' village built on the banks of the Adda, recognised by UNESCO in 1995 as the most complete and best-preserved example of a company town in southern Europe. A window onto the everyday life of a community designed around the factory, the hydroelectric plant and the workers' houses.
