In Ofena, in the basin known as "the oven of Abruzzo" for its especially hot summers at the foot of the Gran Sasso and the Calderone glacier, the Cataldi Madonna family has grown exclusively native Montepulciano, Trebbiano and Pecorino vines since the 1920s. The estate is today a benchmark for Pecorino d'Abruzzo, with labels such as Giulia, and for Montepulciano made from century-old vines in the Macerone and Collelungo districts, such as Malandrino. The visit crosses the roughly 31 hectares of the estate, situated above 500 metres with full south-facing exposure, a microclimate that gives the wines minerality and freshness despite the summer heat. For three generations, Cataldi Madonna has interpreted this isolated corner of the province of L'Aquila with wines that faithfully reflect the Conca d'Oro.
