Founded in 1964 in Torano Nuovo by Emidio Pepe, heir to a family tradition going back to 1899, the winery is today run by his daughters Daniela and Sofia together with granddaughter Chiara, custodians of an artisan method that has remained almost unchanged. The Montepulciano and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo grapes are grown organically and biodynamically and vinified with no added yeasts or sulphites, with the traditional foot-treading still preceding fermentation today. The cellar visit reveals the long bottle-ageing periods and the practice of hand-relabelling, which have made Emidio Pepe a world benchmark for the ageing potential of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
