The magnetite mines of Cogne run for more than 100 kilometres of tunnels through the mountains, among the highest mining complexes in Europe, and remained active until 1979. Reopened to the public since 2017, they are visited on a route that leads from the village on foot, in around an hour and three quarters, to the Costa del Pino mine, where visitors board a vintage 1950s train once used by miners for a 1.5-kilometre journey into the heart of the mountain. After the train ride the visit continues on foot through the haulage tunnels, while the Parco Minerario exhibition centre tells the story of Aosta Valley mining with a modern display. An itinerary combining industrial archaeology and alpine hiking in one of the most spectacular settings in the Aosta Valley.
