Archivio Storico Generali

Trieste, Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Founded in Trieste in 1831, Assicurazioni Generali holds one of the world's largest insurance archives in its Historical Archive, housed in Palazzo Berlam on the city's waterfront and declared a cultural heritage asset by the Ministry of Culture for its historical significance and international scope. Among the documents kept are some surprising stories, from the policy covering Umberto Nobile's 1928 North Pole expedition to Franz Kafka's employment with the company in 1907-1908, up to Italy's first space insurance policies. The ninety-minute guided visit, for groups of up to 15 people, is held by appointment Monday to Thursday and traces the company's history also through a virtual-reality experience immersing visitors in nineteenth-century Trieste along the Grand Canal.
