Founded in 1988 by Giuseppe Benanti, it was among the first wineries to believe in the potential of Etna's native grapes, helping revive the Etna DOC denomination after decades of neglect. The vineyards, spread across several districts on the volcano's northern, eastern and southern slopes, grow Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante, some still on ungrafted rootstock. Cellar visits in Viagrande trace the pioneering research into Etna's zoning, with tastings comparing wines of the same variety from different districts. A journey that has helped make Etna one of the most admired volcanic denominations internationally.
