Nardini

Bassano del Grappa, Veneto

Founded in 1779 by Bortolo Nardini next to the Ponte Vecchio in Bassano del Grappa, it is Italy's oldest distillery and marked a turning point in grappa's history: from then on, farmers brought the pomace to the distillery, rather than the distiller travelling between farms. Over the centuries the Grapperia has hosted illustrious visitors such as Ernest Hemingway, who discovered grappa here and later mentioned it in A Farewell to Arms, and Gabriele D'Annunzio. Today the historic spaces are open to the public with guided tours through the cellars of the old inn, the bridge's foundations and the ancient cellar, ending with a tasting of grappa and spirits.
