Founded in 1881 by Cesare Pio, it is among the last wineries still active in Alba's historic centre, run by the same family, now in its fifth generation. The eighteenth-century building extends over four underground levels built on the ancient Roman walls of Alba Pompeia, dating to 50 BC, down to a floor dug below the water table of the Tanaro. The visit crosses the Roman walls, the barrel-ageing rooms and the historic cellar, ending with a tasting of Barolo and Barbaresco. It was among the first wineries, as early as the nineteenth century, to believe in the international potential of Piedmont's great wines.
