The estate was created in 1858, when King Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy bought these hills in Serralunga d'Alba, built the cellars and the royal villa, and planted the first vines. The king later gave the property to Rosa Vercellana, the famous "Bela Rusin", named Countess of Mirafiore and Fontanafredda. The hamlet, now part of the UNESCO-recognised Langhe-Roero and Monferrato winegrowing landscape, is visited through its nineteenth-century cellars, the royal villa and the rows of Nebbiolo vines that give rise to Barolo. The tour also takes in the estate's lake and woodland.
