Tonno Callipo

Pizzo, Calabria

Founded in 1913 in Pizzo Calabro by Giacinto Callipo, the company was born from the idea of preserving in oil tuna caught with the old fixed local tuna traps, canning it in tins made by local artisans. In 1926 it earned the title of official supplier to the Royal House, establishing the quality of Calabrian produce across Italy. The Pizzo plant sits alongside the Museo della Tonnara, which tells centuries of tuna-fishing history in one of the stretches of coast most tied to this tradition. The visit traces the stages of processing the catch, from the tuna trap to the tin.
