At the Tenuta Greppo, in the late nineteenth century Ferruccio Biondi Santi selected a Sangiovese clone, Sangiovese Grosso, and in 1888 produced the first bottle of Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, giving rise to the denomination. The estate, on a hill overlooking the surrounding vineyards, remains a symbolic site in Italian winemaking history, carried on by his son Tancredi from 1917. The visit traces Brunello's origins through the historic cellars, closing with a tasting of a vintage and a Riserva.
