Castello di Ama

Gaiole in Chianti, Tuscany

The settlement of Ama, of Etruscan origin and first mentioned in a document from the tenth century, has been home since 1972 to the estate founded by four Roman families, which now covers 250 hectares, 90 of them under vine, at around 500 metres above sea level. The vineyards, almost entirely Sangiovese, give rise to Castello di Ama, while a small plot at the top of the Bellavista vineyard produces Apparita, made from Merlot grapes. Since 1999 the estate has hosted the "Castello di Ama per l'Arte Contemporanea" project, born of Lorenza Sebasti and Marco Pallanti's passion with the Galleria Continua, which has brought site-specific works such as Anish Kapoor's "Aima" and Hiroshi Sugimoto's "Confession of Zero" into the hamlet's chapels. Guided tours thus combine the historic hamlet, the winery and the contemporary art installations scattered among the vines and gardens.
