Schiopetto

Capriva del Friuli, Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Mario Schiopetto, born in 1930 to a family of innkeepers from Udine, leased farmland in Capriva del Friuli in 1965 and that same year vinified Tocai as a single varietal, launching what is remembered as the revolution of modern Friuli white wine. The estate, still a benchmark for the Collio today, grows both the area's native varieties and international ones such as Merlot, Refosco, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio, made with the care for varietal purity that was Mario Schiopetto's hallmark. Cellar visits, by appointment, trace the story of one of the fathers of Italian white winemaking through the vineyards and guided tastings. An almost essential stop for anyone wanting to understand how the modern Collio white wine was born.
